Sione Na’a Fiefia
He was born 1 February 1931 and married with two
children. He was trained in New Zealand as a primary
school teacher. He graduated with a B. Ed degree
from the University of Hawaii in 1966. Received
a Diploma of Education Administration with distinction
from Reading University in England.
He was first appointed as teacher in 1954 and taught
in primary and secondary schools and had seven years
at Teachers College. In 1972, he was appointed Director
of Education for Tonga. In 1982 he became Director
of the USP Extension Centre in Nuku’alofa.
He
has attended overseas conferences, seminars and
meetings: Commonwealth Mathematics Conference in
Trinidad in 1968, South Pacific Education Seminar
in Apia (Western Samoa) in 1970, Commonwealth Education
Conference in Nairobi (Kenya) in 1972, South Pacific
Directors of Education Meeting in Palau in 1974,
Led Tongan Educational delegation to Singapore in
1978, Commonwealth Conference in New Delhi in 1979,
Member of Council and Executive Committee of the
USP representing Tonga Government 1972 to 1982, and
appointed by the Ministry of Education to be Researcher
and Author for the History of Tonga College in its
Centenary – 1982.
5. Bishop Patelisio P Finau, S.M D.D.
Had primary education in Tonga and New Zealand continued
with secondary education in New Zealand. Pursued
Priestly Study in Mount St. Mary’s, Marist
Seminary and Greenmeadows in New Zealand. Had Post
Graduate study in Britain and Philippines (M.A.)
He was ordained as Priest in 1959 and later ordained
as Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Tonga in 1972.
He is presently the Chairman of the Pacific Conference
of Churches.

Dr. ‘Epeli Hau’ofa
He is currently the Professor in Scociology and Assistant
Head of the School of Social and Economic Development
in the University of the South Pacific.
7. Rev. Dr. Sione Latukefu
Born in 1927 at Kolovai, Tongatapu, Tonga. Educated
at Methodist primary and secondary schools, Government
Teachers Training College and Sia-‘a-toutai
Theological College (including Melbourne College
of Divinity L. Th by correspondence) in Tonga;
completed further education at Queensland University
(BA [1957], Dip. Ed. [1958], B. Ed. [1961]). Completed
Ph. D at the Australian National University in
1967.
Taught at Church primary schools, Tupou College,
Inspector of Wesleyan church schools in Tonga; Lecturer
in History at the University of Papua New Guinea
from 1967 to 1985, appointed Associate Professor
of History; Visiting Fellow in Pacific History at
the Australian National University from 1986 to 1988,
Principal of the Pacific Theological College, Suva
Fiji from 1989 to 1991. Now officially retired, but
continuing as a Visitor with the Division of Pacific
and Asian History, Research School of Pacific Studies,
Australian National University to continue research
and writing on the History of Tonga.
Publications include three books and many chapters
in books, articles in academic journals and other
publications.
8. Dr. Bill Hodge
He is Dean of Students and Associate Professor at
the Faculty of Law, University of Auckland. Dr.
Hodge has been at the University of Auckland since
1972, where he teaches Constitutional Law, Employment
Law, Torts and Pacific Legal Studies.
He has published books on Torts and Criminal Procedure,
and is currently the General Editor, and convener
of the Editorial committee, of the South Pacific
Law Reports. The South Pacific Law Reports, which
are published annually by Oxford University Press,
are a collection of judgements from South Pacific
island states, including Western Samoa, Fiji, Cook
Islands, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Vanuatu, Nauru, Niue,
the Solomon Islands and, of course, Tonga.
Dr Hodge has degrees from Harvade (B.A. 1963) and
Stanford (J.D. 1970), and remains an American citizen.
9. Dr. C. Guy Powles
He was born and practiced law in Wellington. He studied
the legal and political systems on Tonga, Western
Samoa and Fiji and did his doctorate at Australian
National University, Canberra. The work in Tonga
was done mainly between 1974 and 1977, and the
theses submitted in 1979.
He has written papers and books on Pacific Island
courts and legal systems and has held consultancies
and judicial posts in several pacific island countries.
At present, Guy Powles teaches law (including Pacific
Legal Systems) at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.
He very much appreciates the opportunity to keep
in touch with developments in Tonga.
