HRDMT
WILL AWAIT THE COMPLETION OF THE JUDICIAL PROCESS
ON “TAIMI ‘O TONGA” BAN
The
Advisory Committee of the Human Rights and Democracy
Movement in Tonga last night decided they will
await the completion of the judicial process on
the Taimi ‘o Tonga before making
a decision on civil disobedience.
Speaking
on behalf of the HRDMT, Lopeti Senituli said, “The
Advisory Committee last night decided that it will
be in the national interest to allow the judicial
process to complete its course. And should the
government decide to defy a new decision handed
down by the Supreme Court (like they did on 4 April)
then HRDMT will then decide on upholding the new
Supreme Court decision even if it involves civil
disobedience.”
He
added, “The Advisory Committee also agreed
that in the meantime HRDMT will lobby the Nobles’ and
People’s Representatives in the Legislative
Assembly to rescind the new Ordinance (promulgated
by the Government on 4 April) when it is submitted
to the Legislative Assembly”.
Senituli
also explained that the Advisory Committee was
informed by HRH Prince Tu’ipelehake (No.
1 Nobles’ Representative from Ha’apai)
that he will definitely vote against the new Ordinance
(promulgated by the Privy council on 4 April 2003)
when it is submitted to the Legislative Assembly. “The
Advisory Committee is delighted by HRH Prince Tu’ipelehake’s
declared stance and hopes that it will have gentle
influence on his Noble brethren”, Senituli
said.
Senituli
concluded saying that the Supreme Court today agreed
to hear Taimi ‘o Tonga’s application
for judicial review of the latest (fourth) ban
on 21 May 2003.
