The Sky’s The Limit (Saturn Sky 2007)

ssky.jpgIntroduction: The new Saturn Sky is a 2007 model but has been available on the market since spring of 2006. This new model brings some welcome warmth and activity to the Saturn brand as its first convertible. As I drove this show stopper around the busy streets of Los Angeles, and took it to Polynesian functions, the people wanted to know how I got my hands on such a beauty. Fun to drive and relatively easy on the wallet, the Sky’s attractive shape will certainly turn a lot of bystanders’ heads.I would say that this vehicle suits all occasions but I would specifically cater this to all those that are from the ages of 18-35 years of age. The ideal fit would be for young Tongan girls who are having a big 21st birthday and your parents want to throw you a big party. This vehicle would be the ultimate present for you.

Performance: A 2.4-liter, inline four-cylinder engine resides underneath the Sky’s hood. It develops 177 horsepower and 166 lb-ft of torque. It sends its power to the rear wheels through a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional five-speed automatic.

Style and Safety: Though roadsters aren’t typically known for having roomy cabins, the Saturn Sky is better than most in terms of offering enough room for those with large physical stature (like the Tongans) to stretch out. A wraparound dash and high door sills surround the driver like the cockpit of a fighter jet, and bolstered seats are comfortable and supportive. The retractable top is a bit fussy; lowering it requires the driver to turn a latch on the windshield, pop the rear deck lid with a button in the glove box, then get out of the car and manually fold the top down into its well before slamming the rear deck closed. It’s not difficult, and very simple to operate.

Four-wheel antilock brakes are standard equipment. So is On Star, GM’s telematics system. Side airbags and stability control aren’t offered.

Feel Factor: When driving the Saturn Sky, you receive a cool comfort feeling of knowing that it’s a vehicle where heads will turn just to look at it twice. As I pulled up to a couple of Tongan functions, people were just looking to see what kind of car it was. So, for those of you Tongans who are looking for an inexpensive sports beauty, this would be a great pick for you.
