Displays of Love and Respect throughout the Kingdom
“U.S. Peace Corps”– The Headquarter for the US Peace Corp joined the national mourning. The Peace Corp staff has always made a great effort to maintain good Public Relations in Tonga.

“Tonga High School”–I wish to remind some of the readers that King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV was the founder of Tonga High School. I hope the show of respect was not an act of compliance with traditions and authoritarian direction, but rather an act of respect from the heart and honor of the long terms mission of education and other related aspects of life. May the school motto “To The Best” live on in the memory of the founder in years to come.

“Ministry of works” –The Head Office for Ministry of Works located at Vaololoa covered most of their front fence with black and some stylish purple on top.

“Air New Zealand Office” — If all displays around Nuku’alofa were to be judged by me, I would award the Air New Zealand Office with the prize of “Best Style”. The background colors and designs seemed to amplify their outward presentation of respect.

“Uliti Uata Building” — The height of ‘Uliti Uata’s building puts up a great non-verbal statement for the public. There are several shops, which are operated by different owners. I am not sure whether the Land lord is making a campaign or collective financial contribution empowered by this public symbolic statement.
“Ofa Simiki Building” –The wind and rain may have ruined this neat show of respect. I know the owner is Mrs ‘Ofa Simiki and most of the shopkeepers are females. With several stylist employed in this building, it could be the feminine factor that makes the difference in the designing process of this display.

“JM Store” –Maybe the Indians have thoughts of their own in designing too!
I appreciated all the work related to the signs and display of mourning by businesses, political and educational institutions. The background actions and final output are driving factors to question our Tongan values in regards to our culture and customs.

Seeing what Tonga has done by “displaying” their utmost respect is heart touching. Witnessing the colors black and purple being casted throughout the entire kingdom leads me to say that Tonga does love their king.
